The First Commandment

You shall have
no other gods before me

Essentially, God is telling His people, Look, I am the sovereign God of history who spoke this world into existence and led you out of slavery. I am the only one in this mess who can save you because I am all-powerful. But not only am Ithe only one who can save you, I want to save you, because I am gracious and merciful, in spite of the fact that you do not deserve it.
